The North Texas Joint Security Awareness Council (JSAC) is a not-for-profit organization that was created in 1991. The group's charter is to combine the resources of industry and government to meet the security education and awareness needs of the greater north Texas defense contractor community. A steering committee comprised of representatives from various defense contractors, the Defense Security Service (DSS), and federal law enforcement was established to explore, plan and present education opportunities for the target audience.
The first public seminar was conducted at Naval Air Station Dallas, Texas in April 1992 and was attended by about 100 representatives from industry and government. In September 1992, a second seminar, this one focusing on international security issues, was held at Texas Instruments in Dallas, TX and drew a crowd of about 150. In 1993, the JSAC elected to conduct seminars twice a year, one by themselves and one in conjunction with the National Classification Management Society (NCMS) Information Systems Special Interest Group (ISSIG). The first seminars were conducted at the Army Reserve School in Dallas, TX.
As the seminars grew and began to draw audiences in excess of 200, it became evident after only a few years that a larger seminar site was going to be necessary. In 1998, the JSAC conducted their first seminar at the Center for Community Development in Dallas, TX. Also, as the logistics and planning for the seminars became more and more involved, it was decided in 1999 to conduct only a single joint JSAC/ISSIG seminar each year.
The security seminars continue to be one of the more popular education and training events in the area. Over the years, guest speakers have included Bill Leonard, former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence and current director of the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO); Steve Garfinkle, former ISOO director; Buck Revell, former Deputy Director of the FBI; Tom Riley, one of the principal FBI agents in the Aldridge Ames spy case, as well as a host of other distinguished speakers and subject matter experts.
Since its inception, JSAC continues to live up to the original charter to provide high quality education and training at an affordable cost.
